Adopting a pet from the Hawaiian Humane Society comes with a variety of benefits to help you and your new companion get off to a strong start. Every pet available for adoption receives a physical evaluation along with important preventative care. This includes spay/neuter surgery, microchipping, de-worming, flea and tick treatment, heartworm testing for dogs and FIV/FeLV testing for cats, and species-appropriate vaccinations. These may include protection against illnesses such as distemper, parvovirus, leptospirosis, hepatitis and others.
We understand that some medical conditions may not be immediately apparent at the time of adoption. To help with this, we offer Post-Adoption Care and Treatment (PACT) exams at our shelter clinic within the first two weeks. These appointments provide veterinary care for illnesses that might arise shortly after adoption.
To further support your pet’s transition, we’ve partnered with VCA Animal Hospitals and Ali’i Animal Hospitals to offer complimentary first veterinary visits. VCA provides a full physical exam and covers up to $250 in treatment costs for any shelter-related illness that occurs within 14 days of adoption. Ali’i Animal Hospitals offers a free first exam within the first 14 days, along with a sample training class and mini grooming treatment to help your pet settle into their new routine. Additionally, many local veterinary clinics in the community offer complimentary initial exams within the first seven days of adoption. A full list of participating clinics are included in your adoption packet. We recommend establishing a relationship with a private veterinarian early on to ensure continued care.
For dog adopters, we’ve partnered with GoodPup to offer live, one-on-one virtual training with certified trainers. These sessions cover everything from basic cues to more advanced behaviors such as barking, jumping and crate training. Adopters receive a free first week, an exclusive lifetime discount, and GoodPup will donate a portion of each sign-up to Hawaiian Humane. Details are included in your adoption packet.
We’re also excited to introduce a new partnership with DocuPet, a pet registration and lost pet recovery service. Every registered pet receives a free custom ID tag linked to a secure online profile. If your pet goes missing, DocuPet’s HomeSafe program helps reunite families by sending real-time alerts and offering 24/7 live support. This partnership adds another layer of protection and helps reduce the number of lost pets entering our shelter. Learn more about registering for DocuPet here.
Please refer to your adoption packet for additional resources and details. We’re here to support you and your new pet as you begin your journey together.
