Middle & High School Contests

Kids in grades 6 – 12 can help animals and enter the Hawaiian Humane Society’s Pause4Paws contest. Pause4Paws is a service contest that challenges kids to design projects that help neighborhood animals. 
Teachers can contact education@hawaiianhumane.org for ideas on how to integrate this contest into their curriculum activities.
One winning entry in each category will be awarded
  • $150 cash
  • Scholarship to the Hawaiian Humane Society’s Summer Experience class for winners 14 years and older ($195 value)
  • Humane Achievement Award school plaque

All students in grades 6-12 living on Oahu are eligible to compete in this contest. Students may participate with partners or in groups. All are encouraged to enter as many times and in as many categories as they wish.
Submission topics
Entries must identify and develop a solution for an issue facing companion animals in the student’s community. Examples: lost and stray pets, animal overpopulation, pet owner responsibilities. Contestants are encouraged to enroll in the Hawaiian Humane Society’s Animal Hero class to learn more about ways to help animals. Tuition waivers are available.
Submission details and rules
  • Video submission requirements:
    • Permission must be secured for all footage, music or photography
    • Videos must be 2 minutes or less and submitted via a YouTube or Vimeo link
    • Videos must close with the current Hawaiian Humane Society logo and URL (Email education@hawaiianhumane.org for current artwork)
  • Essay submission requirements:
    • Length: 450 word maximum, double spaced
    • Submissions must be submitted as a PDF or MS Word file and submitted via email (education@hawaiianhumane.org or in hardcopy to:

  • DEADLINE FOR ALL ENTRIES: Midnight April 10, 2016
  • Contest participation indicates permission for the Hawaiian Humane Society to use entries at its discretion
  • Winners will be announced Friday, May 6, 2016.

Congratulations to the contestants and winners of the Hawaiian Humane Society 2015 Pause4Paws service contest. The competition challenged Oahu’s youth to identify and develop a solution to an issue facing animals in their neighborhood. Contestants presented their project through video, essay or slideshow.
