Pet Visitation Program

Animals can have a positive impact on healing the human spirit. In the Pet Visitation Program, volunteers bring their pets to visit children and adults each month in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, hospices and other care facilities around Oahu. The benefits from these visits include reduced anxiety, relief from loneliness, and enhanced well-being.

Pet visitation volunteers need to be at least 18 years old, a Hawaiian Humane Society volunteer, and willing to make a commitment to visit a facility once a month for six months. Animals in the program include dogs, cats, birds and rodents. Your pet must be at least one year or older, have lived with you for at least six months, and will also need to pass a temperament and aptitude evaluation and health check.

The temperament and aptitude evaluation examines a pet's basic obedience skills and your voice control of your pet. It is important that your pet enjoys interacting with humans and other animals. An animal health certificate is needed and must be signed by your pet's veterinarian. Annual vaccinations and a parasite check are required. The animal should be in good general health.

To become a pet visitation volunteer:

  • Print and complete a Humane Society volunteer application (6-page PDF document). Applications sent via e-mail cannot be accepted. Mail or deliver your completed form to: Hawaiian Humane Society, 2700 Waialae Avenue, Honolulu, HI 96826. No e-mail applications please.
  • Attend a Humane Society volunteer orientation. This will be scheduled for you.

For more information, please call the outreach programs coordinator at 356-2217.
