Microchip ID

Microchips used for pet identification are about the size of a grain of rice. In a procedure similar to a vaccination, the microchip is injected just under the skin between the shoulder blades and lasts for the life of your dog or cat. Veterinarians can provide this service. An identification number is detected when a scanner is passed over the animal's back.

The microchip contains a unique number that is kept in a database at the Hawaiian Humane Society. We keep a permanent record of your OAHU address and phone number at no cost to you. If you give your animal away, send us a note so we can update our database. If you move or change phone numbers on Oahu, download the form below to update your information. If you move out of state, you can register (for a small fee) with the national database for your brand of microchip. Avid's number is 1-800-336-2843.

Microchips are especially beneficial for cats that will not tolerate wearing a collar. Many a happy cat has been reunited with its family — even after over a year being lost — thanks to its microchip ID.

All cats and dogs adopted from Hawaiian Humane Society have microchip IDs. Animals that have come to Hawaii through the state quarantine station also have microchips.

Download this PDF form to update or register your pet's microchip ID. It is one 8.5x11" page. Microchip Update Form.
