Pets in Housing

Pets in Housing is a program begun by the Humane Society in 1994 to promote the successful integration of pets into a larger number of homes on Oahu. Our goals are to create opportunities for more people to enjoy the privilege and joy of pet ownership and help owners and managers to welcome responsible pet owners.

Pets in Housing Services

Property managers, tenants, landlords, Neighborhood Justice Center representatives, and experts in real estate and condominium association law provided input in the development of the Pets in Housing program materials.

You can use the materials as-is or as a guide to develop your own building's pet policy. We will also come to talk to your building association to help you custom design pet policies.

• Tips for Tenants — Helpful hints to show your future landlord that you are a responsible pet owner.
   
• A Checklist for Landlords — A list of questions to help identify responsible pet owners when interviewing prospective tenants.
   
• Pet Application/Registration — A form for owners or managers to gather information about pet residents
   
• Pet Health Report — This form for veterinarians shows that pets are in good health and up-to-date on vaccinations.
   
• Pet Addendum to Rental Agreement — This agreement allows pet owners to indicate their responsibility for their pet's actions, and landlords to be assured of a good tenant and reasonable outcome if any problems should arise.
   
• Recommendations for Condominium House Rules — A guide to developing rules for your building.
   
• Common Pet Problems: Suggested Solutions — Resolve issues of barking dogs, stray cats, fleas, odors and more.
