The doorbell rings, and in the seconds that the screen door is open, the puppy makes a mad dash for the road. A dark-colored cat is illuminated by the headlights of a car driving up Palolo Avenue. The radio traffic reports warn drivers about two loose dogs snarling morning rush-hour traffic as they trot down the zipper lane. A bird owner lets his bird fly free in the house, then suddenly the kids come home and the pet flies out the open door.

Throughout the year, the number rises steadily each day. Most of the animals brought to the shelter are unsocialized (or feral) cats, homeless felines who live in colonies at parks, shopping centers, campuses and elsewhere throughout the island.

The 1,595 caretakers who have signed up with the Hawaiian Humane Society do much more than just feed the cats. They are dedicated to managing the colonies, making sure the cats get veterinary care and sterilizing them so the colony will not grow. Like tens of thousands of others across the country, they are committed to "TNRM," which stands for Trap-Neuter-Return-Manage. This program is not only a humane way to help reduce stray and feral cat populations, but is also very successful.
