FAQ
Adopting Pets
Q. How does the adoption process work? How much does it cost?
A. The adoption process takes about an hour. Give yourself plenty of time to find just the right companion animal. You will be asked to fill out an Adoption Profile and talk with an adoption counselor. (You may want to fill out the Adoption Profile form at home, and bring it with you.) Adoption hours are 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. weekends and holidays.
Q. Is there a way to see which pets you have available for adoption?
A. You can either come by our campus during normal visiting hours to look around, or view profiles and photos of our pets in our online.
Q. Do you visit my home before I can adopt a pet?
A. A home visit is not required prior to adopting. Our counselors will provide you with information to assist you in making your home a safe and healthy environment for both your new pet and your family.
Q. Other than cats and dogs, what types of pets do you adopt out?
A. We also have small animals such as guinea pigs, rabbits, rats, mice, birds and occasionally turtles available for adoption. Please visit the Adopt Small Animals page.

A. There are many different ways to give -- please visit the Get Involved section to learn more.
Q. Do you receive government funding?
A. No, we do not receive funding from the state or federal government. We are not a United Way agency. All of our donations are provided through the generosity of individuals and corporations that support our cause. 100% of your donation stays right here in Hawaii.
Q. Do you offer tours of your facilities?
A. We do not offer guided tours but we encourage the public to visit us during normal visiting hours. The Humane Society invites students to participate in self-guided educational tours. To receive an informational packet, please e-mail education@hawaiianhumane.org.
Q. How many pets do you adopt out each year?
A. Last year, we found new families for more than 5,900 pets and reunited over 3,100 lost pets with their families.
Q. Why do the white Humane Society trucks patrol the streets?
A. We answered more than 15,000 calls for service last year and our Humane Investigators traveled over 170,000 miles responding to emergencies, cruelty investigations and loose and aggressive dog complaints.
Q. Do you use volunteers?
A. Absolutely - volunteers are the backbone of our organization. In fact, we have an entire section of the website dedicated to information about Volunteering.
Q. I understand the Humane Society provides foster care for animals. How does that work?
A. We have fostered more than 730 animals -- animals that are ill or too young for adoption are all cared for in volunteer homes. But that’s not all—the Society fosters animals for those who are temporarily unable to care for their pets—the deployed, the disabled, the hospitalized . . . even those fleeing domestic violence. To learn more or become a foster care volunteer, please call 356-2217.
